CMS Delays 5010 Enforcement for 3 More Months

Date:   3/16/2012

CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid) announced yesterday that they are extending the 5010 Enforcement Discretion Period until June 30, 2012.  CMS previously announced  in late 2011 that they would begin enforcing 5010 compliance April 1, 2012.  Earlier this year, the MGMA (Medical Group Management Association) requested “immediate action” from the Department of Health and Human Services in a letter to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius regarding the provider payment disruption associated with the 5010 mandate.   The additional 3 months of non-enforcement will allow healthcare entities to continue working out their compliance issues without penalty from CMS.
